Georgia Tech rallies, stuns Clemson, 88-85, in OT at ACC Tournament

AFP

gtbuzzcolorGeorgia Tech rallied from 18 down in the last nine minutes to force overtime, then stunned Clemson, 88-85, in the second round of the 2016 ACC Tournament.

Tech (19-13, 9-10 ACC) appeared lifeless and out of chances as Clemson (17-14, 10-9 ACC) held a 65-47 lead at the nine-minute mark.

The comeback wasn’t dramatic, or sudden. The Tigers still led by eight with the ball inside of two minutes to go, but the Yellow Jackets kept chipping away, chipping away, chipping away, finally tying the game at 80-80 on a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left by Marcus Georges-Hunt.

Georgia Tech never trailed in the overtime period, though Clemson had a chance to tie the game on its final possession, but Gabe DeVoe hit the side of the backboard from the left corner with 1.7 seconds left, and the Jackets were able to inbound the ball downcourt and run out the clock.

Georges-Hunt scored 28, and was 15-of-16 from the free-throw line, to lead Tech, which shot 45.5 percent from the field (30-of-66) and 33.3 percent from three (6-of-18).

Clemson got 22 from Jaron Blossomgame, who missed a key free throw late in regulation, before Georges-Hunt’s two makes that tied the game and sent it to overtime.

The Tigers shot 46.3 percent from the floor (31-of-67) and 44.4 percent from three-point range (12-of-27).
