OK, so, something may be up with the news that Lauren Eddy, the director of elections and general registrar in Albemarle County, suddenly resigned her job this week.
Per the minutes of an Albemarle County Electoral Board meeting held on Monday:
“The General Registrar is currently the subject of an investigation and is on administrative leave. No further information is available at this time.”
That statement was attributed in the meeting minutes to the board’s chair, Clara Belle Wheeler, a retired surgeon and former member of the State Board of Elections, and Senior Assistant County Attorney Andrea Ruege.
That meeting was on Monday; Eddy resigned her job on Tuesday, which we learned in a press release from Albemarle County government that was sent to local media outlets on Thursday.
The press release included a line about how the Albemarle County Electoral Board “is committed to ensuring that all elections within Albemarle County remain free, fair, safe and legal,” which I thought rang an odd tone.
Suspicious, I checked her name on the Virginia Online Case Information System, and all I saw were two items for driving with an expired registration, from 2024 and 2025.
I checked again today, and that is still the case.
Adding to the intrigue of whatever is going on: just three weeks ago, on July 24, the Electoral Board met to complete a required annual performance review for Eddy, and the minutes of that meeting tell us that Wheeler “moved to commend Lauren for being with us today, for doing a splendid job, and for her service to the Board and to Albemarle County.”
Eddy had served as the registrar and director of elections in Albemarle County since 2022, after being promoted from the deputy registrar position.
In all, Eddy worked for 20 years in the county registrar office.
