Voting on a proposed constitutional amendment in Virginia is moving forward despite efforts by Republicans to block the measure.

The State Board of Elections, and localities including Staunton and Waynesboro, have announced early voting information and deadlines for the April 21 special election.

The referendum, if passed by Virginia voters, would allow the Constitution of Virginia to be amended by the General Assembly to adopt new congressional districts that would remain in effect until after the 2030 census.

Despite lawsuits and efforts by Republicans to restrict early voting, including a recent discussion on the matter in Augusta County, registrars are moving forward with plans to begin early voting next Friday, on March 6.

Virginia residents may check their voter registration status online at the Department of Elections website or in person at the local registrar’s office.

Save the dates: April 21 special election

  • All polling locations in Virginia will be open on April 21 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Early voting will run from March 6 through April 18.
  • Registered voters may have a ballot mailed to them as long as the request is received by April 10 at 5 p.m.
  • The deadline to register to vote or update your voter registration is April 14. However, those eligible to vote who miss this deadline may still cast a provisional ballot in the election.
  • Each registrar’s office sets its own hours for early voting. For example, while Waynesboro offers voting on weekdays, it closes one hour for lunch each day.
  • Registrar offices will be open for early voting on two Saturdays: April 11 and April 18
  • The SBE recommends doing a little research and verifying hours with your local registrar before voting.

Election rules and procedures

  • All registered voters are eligible to vote in the April 21 special election.
  • You may vote early in person for 45 days prior to the election.
  • On April 21, you will go to your designated polling place to cast your vote.

Question: Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia’s standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?
