The 2014 State Fair of Virginia, dedicated to showcasing the best of Virginia, is seeking the state’s best banjo players and fiddlers to compete on Oct. 4 during this year’s fair.
The open and youth fiddle contest will begin at 11:30 a.m., and the open and youth banjo contest will begin at 3 p.m. Both will be held in the Triple Crown Amphitheater.
“Virginia is the home of the oldest fiddle competition in the country, which took place in 1736,” said Su Tarr, superintendent for both competitions. “The State Fair of Virginia has one of the longest-running competitions in the country, and there are a lot of folks who are very excited that the fair is going to resume competitions in this area.”
Registration will take place on the day of the contests; no pre-registration is required. Contestants must purchase fair admission tickets, but contest entry is included with admission.
First-place winners in the open banjo and fiddle contests will receive $100; second-place winners will receive $75; third-place winners will receive $50; and fourth-place winners will receive $25. Fifth-, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-place winners will receive ribbons. First- through fourth-place winners in the youth banjo and fiddle contests will receive ribbons.

This year’s State Fair of Virginia will open Sept. 26 and run through Oct. 5.
The State Fair is held each fall at its permanent home at The Meadow Event Park in Caroline County. The fair’s mission is to increase agricultural and natural resource awareness and interest through educational programs, exhibitions and competitions in a fun, family-friendly setting.
