An Albemarle County woman was appointed by Gov. Glenn Youngkin to a four-year term on the Virginia Board of Education.

Unsuccessful school board candidate Meg Bryce, a daughter of the late conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, was announced on Friday in a roundup of administration and board appointments by the Republican governor.

Bryce was widely criticized during her campaign for an Albemarle County School Board seat because she was running after taking her own children out of public schools.

“Despite the fact that I don’t think it’s the best place for my children, right now, I very much hope it will be at some point in the future, and I’m willing to come back and work to make it better,” said Bryce in a news report on NBC29.

Youngkin’s office released a statement that said Bryce’s “extensive background in education, her advocacy for student-centered policies, and her commitment to restoring common sense in education for all Virginia students will be instrumental in ensuring that every parent, student and teacher receives the essential resources and support needed to thrive.”

Youngkin also appointed Ida Outlaw McPherson, an attorney in Hampton Roads, to the Board of Education.

Youngkin announced other key administration and board appointments Friday afternoon.
