Tanner Roark outpitched Jake Arietta, but neither was around for the end of the Chicago Cubs 4-3, 13-inning win over the Washington Nationals on Sunday.
A Javier Baez solo homer off Nats reliever Blake Treinen (2-1, 4.38 ERA) ended it for the Cubs (24-6), who completed a four-game sweep of the NL East leaders (19-12).
Arietta gave up three runs on six hits, striking out seven and walking four in five difficult innings for him today.
He left with the Cubs trailing 3-1 and with Roark humming. Roark gave up a run on four hits in six innings, but the Cubbies tied the game in the seventh off the bullpen, getting a two-run single from Kris Bryant to tie the game at 3-3.
Cubs manager Joe Maddon continued his strategy of not pitching to Nats star Bryce Harper, who walked six times and was hit by a pitch on Sunday, and for the series had one hit in four official at-bats, with 13 walks.
Ryan Zimmerman, hitting behind Harper, was 1-for-7 with an RBI double on Sunday, and for the series was 2-for-19, with 15 of those at-bats coming with Harper on base ahead of him.
