Community rallies to support family after 11-year-old child dies in sledding accident

An 11-year-old Staunton boy is dead following a tragic sledding accident this week, and the community is rallying to support the family.

Charlie Scott Taylor was a sixth-grade student at Shelburne Middle School in Staunton. He died on Wednesday at Augusta Health.

Charlie loved the outdoors and video games, according to his obituary.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.

In a gofundme set up to assist the family during this time, Charlie was described as a “loving, funny, smart and truly amazing child.”

“Even in his short 11 years, Charlie made a lasting impact on his world, his school, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

“He was deeply loved, and his absence has left a void that can never be filled.”

To date, more than $15,000 has been raised to support the family.

Henry Funeral Home is picking up the cost of the funeral, according to the gofundme organizer. The funds raised will assist Charlie’s mother, Courtney Miller, and son, Colin, as they navigate the unimaginable loss together, and allow Miller to take some time off from work in the aftermath of this tragedy.

His family said “his laugh and smile were infectious” and will never be forgotten.

The Shenandoah Valley received both snow and sleet in a winter storm last weekend. The storm left behind a thick layer of ice on top of the snow. Most schools for the region were shut down for the entire week.

On Tuesday, Staunton City Schools posted on social media: “Show us how you’re enjoying the winter wonderland: sledding, cocoa mugs, cozy vibes and all.” More than 20 comments were shared capturing families bundled up in the cold temperatures, showing kids sledding or building igloos with ice chunks.

Staunton public schools were closed all week due to icy road conditions and low temperatures.
