Charlottesville releases new parks naming survey

charlottesvilleThe City of Charlottesville has launched a new survey to collect input from Charlottesville residents on new names proposed for Emancipation Park & Justice Park.

Charlottesville City Council has decided to consider new names for the downtown parks initially renamed in June 2017. Council will select a new name for Emancipation Park (formerly Lee Park) and determine whether to keep the name Justice Park (formerly Jackson Park) or select a new name. The park name options were narrowed down by Council in April 2018 after an initial community survey and public hearing.

The new survey for city residents includes 4 names for Emancipation Park and 3 names for Justice Park. City Council will also consider write-in suggestions for both parks, however, the names Lee Park, Jackson Park, and Emancipation Park will not be considered.

Finalists for Emancipation Park:

  • Central Park
  • Library Park
  • Market Street Park
  • Swanson Legacy Park*

* Swanson Legacy Park was a write-in suggestion from our previous survey. The name honors Gregory H. Swanson, the first African-American admitted to the University of Virginia (1950).

Finalists for Justice Park:

  • Court Square Park
  • Courthouse Park
  • Justice Park

The survey can be completed online, on paper in the City Manager’s office or via telephone. Copies will also be distributed in the June utility bills.

To participate:

This survey will be open from May 4 to June 30, 2018. Council is expected to make a decision on the park names in July.
