Bridgewater College announces fall semester arts, events

From lectures by featured speakers to music performances and theater productions, Bridgewater College offers a wide range of arts and events for the community to enjoy during the 2018 fall semester.

National and local guests will serve as special speakers.

• Bill Campbell, founder and publisher of Rosarium Press, will speak at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6. The movie Black Panther will be screened at 8 p.m. Both the lecture and screening will be held in Cole Hall.
• Lindy Wagner from the Sustained Dialogue Institute will present an endowed lecture at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in Cole Hall. Wagner will speak on “Throwing Shade: Navigating Conflict Effectively.” This program is sponsored by the Mark Leatherman Fund for Connecting and Creating Community Building and the Harry W. and Ina Mason Shank Peace Studies Endowment.
• Allen Groves, dean of students at the University of Virginia, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, in the Carter Center for Worship and Music, as part of Bridgewater College’s events celebrating free speech, Constitution Day and the International Day of Peace.
• Michael Neiberg, the inaugural chair of War Studies in the Department of National Security and Strategy at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pa., will speak on the “Paris Peace Conference” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, in the Boitnott Room.
• The documentary film Food for Change will be screened at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the Boitnott Room. The film focuses on food co-ops as a force for dynamic social and economic change in American culture. This endowed lecture is sponsored by the Harold H. Hersch Educational Fund and the Friendly City Food Co-op.
• Tom Martin will speak about the book Powell to Power, Exploration of the Grand Canyon, by Otis Reed “Dock” Marston and edited by Tom Martin, at 4 and 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, in the Boitnott Room. The same presentation will be given at both times.
• Lauren Camp, author of Discovering Baghdad: How Writing My Father’s Story Took Me to the Tigris, will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the Boitnott Room. Camp will speak on “One Hundred Hungers.”
• Peter Enns, an American biblical scholar, theologian and writer, will serve as Bridgewater College’s spiritual life speaker at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 8, in the Boitnott Room.

The fall schedule includes a wide variety of music programs, which will be held in Cole Hall unless otherwise noted.

• Dr. Larry Taylor, associate professor of music at Bridgewater College, will present an organ recital, “On a Mission,” at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9.
• The Washington Balalaika Society Orchestra will present a lyceum at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, in the Carter Center for Worship and Music.
• A Homecoming concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, in the Carter Center.
• Bridgewater College faculty members Dr. Vimari Colón-León and Dr. Larry Taylor will present a flute and piano recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, in the Carter Center.
• A Bridgewater College Oratorio and choir concert will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in the Carter Center.
• The BC Jazz Ensemble will present a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4.
• Tenor Elliott Page will present a lyceum at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Carter Center.
• The BC Symphonic Band will present a tribute to the 100-year anniversary of the end of World War I at 3p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11.
• Bridgewater College will host a Holiday Extravaganza at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, and at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8.
• Theatre at Bridgewater College will present Men on Boat by Jaclyn Backhaus at 8 p.m. Oct. 25 through 27 and at 3 p.m. on Oct. 28, in Cole Hall. Tickets are $10 for adults; $8 for seniors and non-BC students. This production is directed by Dr. Scott Cole, associate professor of theater at Bridgewater College.

All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to more than 1,900 undergraduate students.
