bridgewater collegeThe Bridgewater College Alumni Association recognized a number of students in the campus community at the annual college awards ceremony on April 22.

The $1,500 Alumni Legacy Scholarships are presented to rising juniors or seniors whose parent(s) graduated from Bridgewater College. Receiving Alumni Legacy Scholarships for the 2018-19 academic year are:

  • Stephen B. Bates, a sophomore business administration and computer science double major, is the son of Leslie and Robert Bates of Bridgewater, Va.
  • Audrey Ferguson, a senior athletic training major, is the daughter of Robert and Cindy Ferguson of Lynchburg, Va.
  • English C. Jackson, a sophomore liberal studies major, is the daughter Mr. and Mrs. Brian Jackson of Grottoes, Va.
  • John Tucker, a sophomore business administration major, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Tucker of Vienna, Va.
  • Kathryn Tucker, a sophomore philosophy and religion major, is the daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. James Tucker of Vienna, Va.
  • William Tucker, a sophomore health and exercise science major, is the son of Terry Tucker of Harrisonburg, Va.

The Citizenship Award is presented annually to a senior who has demonstrated citizenship and made contributions within the college community.

Kathleen Springer, a senior psychology major, is the recipient of this year’s Citizenship Award. She is the daughter of Sean and Kathy Springer of Stafford, Va.

Springer is a member of the Philomathes Society, Bridgewater’s scholastic honor society, and serves as secretary of the campus chapter of Alpha Chi, a national scholastic honor society. She is a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, a national political science honors society, Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society, and serves as president of Psi Chi, a national psychology honor society. She is a member of the college’s Flory Honors Program.

She has served as a psychology tutor and an Academic Coach. Springer also has served as a member of SOAR Mentors, who work with orientation programs and assist with the transition of new students to Bridgewater College.

Springer serves as president of Bridgewater’s Student Support Foundation and served as a member of the Spiritual Life Board from 2015-17. She also was active with Relay for Life, serving as activities chair during 2014-15 and as accounting/registration co-chair in 2015-16.

The Dr. Jacob S. Huffman Outstanding Student Leadership Award is presented annually to a senior to support him or her as they embark on a career, either in the workforce or in the pursuit of graduate studies.

Raneeka Foster, a senior biology major and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Foster of Stafford, Va., received the Dr. Jacob S. Huffman Outstanding Student Leadership Award.

Foster is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and serves as secretary of the campus chapter of Beta Beta Beta, a national biological honor society.

Foster is a senior resident adviser, and she is a student assistant for biology laboratory classes. She serves as the first president of the Bridgewater College’s Diversity League and has served as event coordinator for the Black Student Association. She is a three-year member of the Dance Team.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to more than 1,900 undergraduate students.
