The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank has received a $75,000 donation from the Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion Resources, Inc., parent company of Dominion Virginia Power. A gift of this size will allow the Food Bank to provide 300,000 meals, enough to feed more than 3,000 hungry neighbors for one month.
A check presentation event took place on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 11 a.m. at the BRAFB’s Charlottesville distribution center, located at 1207 Harris Street. Michael McKee, CEO of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, accepted the contribution from Susan King, Dominion External Affairs Representative and Emmett Toms, Dominion External Affairs Manager.
“We are extremely grateful for the Dominion Foundation’s generosity,” said McKee. “Many of the people we serve are among the scores of hardworking Virginians who remain underemployed or stuck in low-wage jobs. With this significant donation, we’ll help many more families stay nourished through difficult times.”
“Community food banks are among the finest examples of neighbors helping neighbors,” said Hunter Applewhite, president of the Dominion Foundation. “Thanks to the staff and volunteers at the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, thousands of adults and children in the Shenandoah Valley and Central Virginia will be fed this winter. It’s a privilege for us to be able to lend a helping hand, especially at this important time.”
The contribution will allow the Food Bank to distribute nourishing food in all parts of its 25-county service area. The BRAFB and its network of agency partners—food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, schools and other feeding programs—serve 114,000 people each month, including:
- 37,400 in the Central Shenandoah Valley (Verona/HQ)
- 35,900 in the Lord Fairfax Area (Winchester branch)
- 23,000 in the Thomas Jefferson Area (Charlottesville branch)
- 17,700 in the Lynchburg Area (Lynchburg branch)
