AFP Focus | Breaking down some campaign money numbers

Dickie Bell had a busy Oct. 1-21 campaign period, raising $13,375 for his 20th District campaign, but Bell also ended the period with $13,635.03 in debts remaining unpaid, according to a report on campaign activity filed with the State Board of Elections this week.

The Bell campaign reported having a balance of $31,200.50 in cash on hand as of Oct. 21. Accounting for the debts remaining unpaid, the campaign would actually have available funds of $17,824.50.

The largest single contributor to the Bell campaign to date has been the campaign of 20th District Del. Chris Saxman, which has given the Bell campaign $16,250 in cash and in-kind contributions, including $9,000 in polling information and data, according to information from the Virginia Public Access Project.

Bell’s Democratic Party opponent, Erik Curren, raised $1,765 in the Oct. 1-21 period and reported a balance of $5,097.27 as of the end of the reporting period.

The Curren campaign report did not list any unpaid debts.

Bell has more than doubled Curren in campaign fundraising overall – taking in $59,749.06 to $25,771.73 in receipts for the Curren campaign.

Nothing much significant in the other local House races. The Republicans are outraising the Democrats, generally, though 26th District Democratic nominee Gene Hart is making it interesting, at least on paper, in his race with Matt Lohr.

The bottom-line figures show Lohr with $104,308.53 in fundraising receipts in the 2009 campaign cycle and Hart with $90,618.74 in fundraising receipts in the cycle. The Hart numbers look better, though, in large part due to $34,999 in cash and in-kind contributions from Hart to his own campaign and $26,227 in cash and in-kind contributions from 25th District Democratic candidate Greg Marrow to the Hart campaign.

The in-kind contributions have come in the form of office rental.

Lohr raised $14,610 for his campaign in the Oct. 1-21 reporting period. Hart raised $1,063.69 in the reporting period.
