Georgia Tech was a tough out, but #20 UVa. held the Yellow Jackets without a field goal for the final 9:52 to fuel a game-ending 22-1 run in posting a 64-45 win Saturday in Atlanta.
Georgia Tech (12-12, 3-8 ACC) led 44-42 with 9:52 to go on a basket and layup by Kammeon Holsey. Virginia (19-5, 10-1 ACC) responded on its next possession with two free throws by Joe Harris at the 9:31 mark.
It was still 44-all at 7:06 when Malcolm Brogdon was fouled driving the lane and hit two free throws to give the Cavs a 46-44 lead. Brogdon then cut the passing lane to steal a pass from a double-teamed Daniel Miller and drove the court for a dunk.
The big blow came on UVa.’s next possession – a Harris three that extended the Virginia lead to seven, its biggest lead of the game to that point.
Holsey made 1-of-2 free throws at 5:51 to make it 51-45 Virginia. That would be the Jackets’ last point on the afternoon.
Akil Mitchell and Anthony Gill threw down back-to-back dunks to push the lead to 10, and the rout was on.
Virginia held Georgia Tech to 15 points in the second half after the Jackets led 30-29 at halftime. Tech shot 6-for-23 in the second half and missed its last nine shots of the game from the field after shooting 48 percent from the field in the first half.
UVa. shot 39 percent from the field in both halves, but shot 45.5 percent from three-point range (5-for-11) and was 17-for-19 from the foul line.
Brogdon led Virginia with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Harris and Gill added 11 points each.
Chris Bolden was the only Georgia Tech player in double figures with 13 points.
