Last-second three lifts UVa. to 48-45 win at #18 Pitt

 

Malcolm Brogdon drained a three-pointer with four-tenths of a second left to lift UVa. to a 48-45 win at #18 Pitt Sunday afternoon.

Virginia (17-5, 8-1 ACC) had tied the game at 45 with 3:11 left on a free throw by Joe Harris, and the two teams combined to miss their next five shots, the last two misses from Pitt (18-4, 6-3 ACC) coming in the final 20 seconds when James Robinson missed a three-pointer from the right wing with 18 seconds to go and Jamel Artis missed from point-blank range after collecting the offensive rebound with 13 seconds to go.

Anthony Gill pulled down the rebound from the Artis miss, and the Cavs called timeout with 9.1 seconds left to set up the final play.

Freshman point guard London Perrantes calmly brought the ball up the court, waited for Harris to flash off one screen and then found Brogdon curling off a second screen just to the left of the top of the key.

Pitt had one last chance with 0.4 on the clock, but the three-quarter-court inbounds pass overshot its mark, and ended up in the hands of Anthony Gill, and the final horn sounded.

Brogdon had a game-high 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. Harris had 11 points in just 26 minutes after sitting for long stretches with minor foul trouble.

Akil Mitchell had a solid game in the post for UVa. with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Virginia shot 40.4 percent (19-of-47) from the field, 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from three-point range and just 50 percent (6-of-12) from the line.

UVa. outrebounded Pitt 33-32. Pitt had come into the game among the nation’s leaders in rebounding margin at +8.5 per game.

The Panthers got 11 points from Artis and 10 from Lamar Patterson, who had come into the game averaging 17.7 points on 50 percent shooting from the field, but struggled from the field on Sunday, finishing 3-of-14 shooting on the day.
