Caissons claim season opener with 79-74 victory

Fishburne opened the 2012-2013 regular season with a victory over St. John’s Northwestern Military School (Wisc.) with a score of 79-74.

The Caissons had a balanced offensive attack with five players scoring in double figures with Kuran Iverson leading the way with 20 points.

The game had a post-season like atmosphere from the start with both teams playing hard. Zach Lewis got the offensive attack started with three consecutive baskets in the early going that sparked the team. Chase Cormier had a spectacular floor game and had the task of limiting opposing point guard Jevon Thomas, a Big East recruit, to only 10 points.

Zak Kirkbride made some key defensive plays late in the game and iced the game with two free throws with 3 seconds to play. In addition to Iverson’s 20 points, Kirkbride, Lewis, and Alassane Kah contributed with 12 points each and Daniel Dixon provided a spark off the bench with 11 points. For St. John’s, Jerron Wilbut led the Lancers with 31 points.
