The Friday morning commute could bring a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain, but good news, it should be cleared up in time for University of Virginia fans looking to hit the road to Charlotte.
Waynesboro will be on the northern fringes of the storm, according to Tom Kines, senior meteorologist with AccuWeather. Waynesboro and areas north will likely get an inch or less of snow or ice, but to the south, there could be up to three inches of snow. In the southwest corner of the state, near the North Carolina border, you could see four to five inches of snow.
“Snow arrives statewide later Thursday night, so the morning commute Friday could certainly be slippery,” Kines said. “The good news is this is a fast-moving storm, so the precipitation will likely be done by Friday evening.”
For most areas of the state, it should be a dry snow and easy to shovel.
The weather should improve before fans have to make the four-and-a-half hour trek to North Carolina for the ACC Championship Game. UVA football will play at Bank of America Stadium vs. Duke at 8 p.m. on Saturday night. Kines said it will be cloudy in Charlotte with temperatures dropping to around 40 degrees at game time.
“This storm will be long gone by Saturday so those traveling Saturday should have no problem, and the return of some sunshine along with a light wind will be good news for the tailgaters,” Kines said.

Beyond the weekend, a couple of very cold days are in store for Virginia as arctic air from Canada arrives next week.
“More times than not, these cold outbreaks are preceded by a storm … sometimes rain and sometimes snow,” he said.
