Norfolk: Five arrested following Sunday morning barricade in Ballentine Place

Five people have been arrested after shots were fired at a residence in the Ballentine Place neighborhood in Norfolk.

According to police, on Sunday morning at approximately 4:21 a.m., Norfolk officers responded to reports of a gunshot disturbance on Grandy Avenue. When officers arrived, they could hear active gunfire. The investigation traced the gunshots coming from a home in the 3100 block of Cape Henry Avenue.

The officers attempted to make contact with the occupants but were unsuccessful.

A hostage/crisis negotiation team and special operations team responded to assist the officers.

Seven people were placed in custody at the scene. Two of the individuals were released from custody and five were charged with discharging a firearm in public and reckless handling of a firearm.

The individuals charged include:

  • George T. Sheriff, 28, of Norfolk
  • Jesus A. Potestas, 26, of Norfolk
  • Joseph C. Umidi, 24, of Norfolk
  • Celia M. Buonomo, 27, of Norfolk
  • Lindsey B. Eddington, 29, of Norfolk

Sheriff was also charged with maintaining a common nuisance.

All five individuals are currently being held in the Norfolk City Jail without bond.

No injuries were reported during this incident.
