Moderate to heavy snowfall is making roadways slick in the central and southern Shenandoah Valley. By late morning Sunday, some areas have reported four inches of snow. Conditions are expected to deteriorate throughout the day, and significant re-freezing is expected Sunday night and Monday morning. The Virginia Department of Transportation urges motorists to avoid unnecessary travel during this period.
Crews and contractors for the VDOT Staunton District are in continuous winter-weather operations. They work rotating 12-hour shifts to plow and treat roadways with the goal of having all roads passable within 48 hours after the end of the storm.
Here are the road conditions as of 11:45 a.m. Sunday in the VDOT Staunton District:
- Interstate 64 – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.
- Interstate 66 – Clear conditions in Warren County.
- Interstate 81 – Moderate conditions in Rockbridge and Augusta counties. Clear conditions in Rockingham, Shenandoah and Frederick counties.
- Primary roads – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland and Augusta counties. Clear conditions in Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties.
- Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland and Augusta counties. Clear conditions in Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties.
