Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell sent a letter to United States Attorney General Eric Holder last night officially revoking the Commonwealth’s consent to the planned transfer of convicted murderer Jens Soering to Germany.

Last week, former Gov. Tim Kaine had requested the transfer of Soering, a former University of Virginia student and the son of a German diplomat convicted for the 1985 murders of his girlfriend’s parents, to a German prison.

In McDonnell’s letter to Holder, he wrote that he had not been privy to Kaine’s intentions, but upon reviewing the case has decided that the state must oppose the proposed transfer.

“I believe that as the governor of Virginia, with custody of Jens Soering, I am responsible for ensuring that justice is done. It is imperative that Soering serve out his punishment in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Consequently, I hereby revoke Virginia’s consent to the transfer of Soering to the federal government,” McDonnell wrote in the letter.
