Highland Local Council Met Feb. 18

Contributors

The Highland Senior Services Local Council met Monday, Feb. 18, in the Highland Medical Center conference room.

The primary focus of this meeting was financial. The group had invited Paul Lavigne and Teresa Wilkinson to answer questions about federal, state and local funding and about revenues and expenditures specifically related to the new Second Wind program. Although the fiscal officer was unable to participate in the meeting, Paul provided spreadsheets and detailed explanations to the group. Members of the Local Council subsequently have made such comments as, “Now we can move forward with creativity and confidence,” and “I sense the air is a bit more clear now for most. And not antagonistic.

This is a good thing so now our council and staff can concentrate on further development of Senior Services for Highland County and some fun and exciting fund raising.” As a matter of fact, a new fund raising opportunity was presented at the close of the meeting and is being developed.

The Local Council also heard Paul say that this Local Council is probably the most active in VPAS and how much he appreciates their work, and heard BH RD Kathryn Coit announce that she has nominated them for a 2013 Governor’s Volunteerism and Community Service Award, with letters of support submitted by Paul and the Highland DSS Director Sharon Sponaugle. Results of this nomination will not be known until later in March, but one Council member commented, “It is like the Academy Awards. It’s an honor just to be nominated.”
