ERSC Members Visited Elkton Welcome Center

ersc-elkton welcome ctrThirty-one East Rockingham Senior Center members, volunteers and employees visited the Elkton Welcome Center on December 12. While this was actually the second visit for some of our members, many had never been to the center.

Our tour host was Elkton Welcome Center and ERSC volunteer, Joshua Gooden, who explained how the Welcome Center was developed (after Elkton Centennial Jubilee in 2008) when many of the folks involved in that event decided to continue their outreach and promotion of the town of Elkton. Gooden explained that the Welcome Center is now a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and is completely manned by a volunteer Executive Director (Heidi Findlay) and a volunteer board.

Gooden also mentioned that the Welcome Center was successful in its recent acquisition of the Virginia is for Lovers “LOVE” artwork display currently situated at grounds of Elkton Town Hall for a period of about ten days. (ERSC members were fortunate to have visited the LOVE display where a group photo was taken about one week ago.) Gooden also mentioned that a “Tribute to Veterans” exhibit now showing at the Welcome Center has been a months long project and has involved many former servicemen loaning their uniforms and memorabilia for display at the Center. The Welcome Center also boasts hundreds of historic photos from years past, including many former historic landmarks and people that many ERSC members fondly recalled.

As one ERSC member excitedly said today about the photographs and visit, “I know a lot of them, and I really enjoyed this!”
