Project GROWS educational farm for youth is partnering with Altenergy Inc. in Staunton to install solar panels on its 10-acre farm site in Verona to power the farm’s walk-in cooler.
“Sustainable agriculture is about producing more energy than you use, whether it is labor or soil. This is how we grow healthy food for our community and how we teach the kids who visit the farm to grow it. What a great fit for our organization to be able to model this sustainable behavior in a deeper way by adding alternative energy into our system,” said Ryan Blosser, Project GROWS’ executive director.
Project GROWS operates a 10-acre farm in Augusta County at 608 Berry Farm Road. The nonprofit farm serves children and youth in Staunton, Waynesboro, Augusta and surrounding counties, with a mission to improve children’s health through food access, food distribution and hands-on gardening and nutrition education.
Fifty percent of food grown at Project GROWS is donated and 50 percent is sold in order to raise funds for educational programming. Members of the community may purchase weekly deliveries of food through the Project GROWS Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, or by visiting the Project GROWS at the North Augusta Farmer’s Market every Wednesday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Verona Government Center Market dock, or the Waynesboro Farmer’s Market Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Waynesboro Pavilion at Constitution Park.
