UVa. women rally, knock off JMU
The Virginia women’s basketball team rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit to defeat visiting James Madison, 59-53, Tuesday (Dec. 20) at John Paul Jones Arena. Sophomore guard Ataira Franklin (Bowie, Md.) finished with a career-high22 points to lead the Cavaliers.
With the win, Virginia improved to 10-2 overall and 7-0 at home this season. The victory also snapped a two-game JMU win streak in the series as the Cavaliers avenged two-point losses in 2009 and 2010.
James Madison’s record went to 7-2 overall with the loss.
For just the third time this season, Virginia trailed at halftime. The Dukes got off to a fast start, scoring the game’s first seven points which prompted a timeout by Virginia head coach Joanne Boyle. Read more
Buzzer-beater lifts EMU past Shenandoah in OT
Dajon Daniel (Fredericksburg, VA/Mountain View) capped a crazy night with a game-winning layup at the buzzer of overtime, giving Eastern Mennonite’s men an 88-87 win at Shenandoah Tuesday.
Shenandoah’s James Bowens (Stephens City, VA/Sherando) made only the first of his two free throws with 5.6 seconds left in overtime to give the Hornets a one-point lead. Adam Burroughs (Roanoke, VA/Northside) grabbed the rebound, and his pass up the court was nearly stolen, but an SU player stepped out of bounds with the ball.
Randell Smith (Woodbridge, VA/Garfield) then inbounded the ball near midcourt and found Daniel curling off a screen from the left side for the winning bucket. Read more
Bridgewater comes up short against North Central
North Central (Ill.) controlled the glass Tuesday evening and defeated Bridgewater College, 67-52, at the Daytona Beach Shootout.
The difference in the game was on the boards where North Central held a 40-25 advantage. Exactly half of the rebounds came on the offensive end, leading to 20 second-chance points.
For the second straight day, a late first-half run put the Eagles in a big hole at the half. North Central outscored the Eagles 14-7 over the final five minutes of the first half to lead 36-20 at the break.
The teams basically traded points in the second half as the Eagles could get no closer than 13 points in the final 20 minutes.
Ed Reddick led the Eagles with nine points while Ronnie Thomas and Aaron Adams added eight each.
The Eagles return to action on New Year’s Day when they travel to Averett for a 1:00 p.m. contest.

East Rockingham High School SCA spearheads donations for homebound seniors
Based on a presentation in November by East Rock Senior Center Director Lisa Gooden about ways the East Rockingham High School SCA could partner with the Senior Center, a plan was set in motion by ERHS SCA Advisors Kim Dean and Natalie McCrady to have students collect personal care items for the Center’s most vulnerable clients – the homebound elderly.
In the photo taken by Joshua Gooden last Friday, ERHS SCA officers are shown holding some of the items collected: powder, Q-tips, cotton balls, and soap. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand wipes, tissues, shampoo, lotion, and even some cute small stuffed animals were packaged for delivery to our clients receiving home delivered meals. Also, Rebecca Holloway, the ERHS FFA advisor, donated a case of oranges and grapefruit for the project, which will be a nice treat for the recipients. SCA members also created colorful, handcrafted cards to go along with the items that will be delivered to folks. Read more

January schedule at OASIS
In January, OASIS Fine Art & Craft offers a mezzanine exhibit of Elaine Hurst paintings, “A Different Perspective”, a members’ exhibit “From the Heart”, and a concert by Blue O’Connell.
Elaine Hurst is a slim , gentle woman with a physique that tells you she is well-acquainted with the out-of-doors. In fact she recently traveled to Art in The Open in Wexford, Ireland, an outdoor painting experience that telling about still makes her eyes light up. With memberships in many national arts organizations and representation in seven galleries here and abroad, Hurst is known as among the finest painters in the Shenandoah Valley.
Hurst also shows kindness and generosity in helping local arts groups, organizing plein air groups, and sharing her knowledge and experience via her website, elainehurst.com. Most of the paintings for this exhibition use a different perspective in one way or another. In one painting, Hurst says, she might be looking down upon a dog, and paint him on a very large canvas. In another painting, it may look almost as if you are flying over the landscape, and seeing it much as a patchwork quilt. Read more
Poll: Gingrich leads nationally, but …
The good news for Newt Gingrich – and if you’re a loyal backer of the former House Speaker, don’t get too excited, but here it is: Gingrich continues to lead the Republican presidential field in the national polls.
The bad news: His campaign appears to be cratering in Iowa and New Hampshire, the homes of the first two nomination contests on the 2012 election schedule.
Public Policy Polling has Gingrich comfortably ahead of Mitt Romney and Ron Paul in its national polling – with Gingrich at 35 percent, Romney at 22 percent and Paul at 11 percent. Even in that poll, there was better news for Romney, long considered the almost-frontrunner in the GOP field whose main problem has been his ability to get Republican voters to embrace him. They may finally be warming up to the former Massachusetts governor, with this week’s PPP poll showing that 55 percent of Republican voters view Romney favorably, and that Romney is the top second choice of current Gingrich supporters.
