Washington Nationals make it two in a row in Colorado

Chris Graham

nationals_logoNot sure who this Stephen Strasburg guy thinks he is, but he’s starting to look like another ace for the Washington Nationals.

Strasburg (7-6, 4.22 ERA) allowed an unearned run on two hits in seven innings in a 4-1 Nats win Wednesday in Colorado.

The righty is 2-1 with a 1.35 ERA in three starts since returning from the disabled list on Aug. 8. In his last six starts dating back to June 23, Strasburg is 4-1 with a 1.41 ERA, allowing five earned runs on 20 hits in 32 innings, striking out 31 and walking six.

But even with him pitching another gem on Wednesday, the Nationals still trailed 1-0 heading into the seventh, with Rockies starter Jorge de la Rosa pitching himself into and out of trouble, giving up four hits and walking six in six innings, but not allowing a run,

Washington finally broke through in the seventh. With the bases loaded and two down, and Ryan Zimmerman at bat, Gonzalez Germen threw a wild pitch that allowed Bryce Harper to score from third with the tying run.

The Nats added a pair of runs in the eighth on a two-out, two-run triple by Jayson Werth, batting for the second straight night in the leadoff spot.

A Zimmerman RBI single added an insurance run in the ninth. Jonathan Papelbon closed out the game with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth for his 20th save.

Washington (60-59) is three and a half back of the New York Mets (64-56) in the National League East.
