After a presidential election where tens of thousands of Virginia voters experienced long lines and several hour long delays at the polls, Democrats in the House of Delegates unveiled a wide array of election reforms at a morning press conference. The election reform package included instituting an Early Vote period, extending voting hours to 8 p.m., restoring voting rights, and a host of other measures to increase access to the ballot box.

The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, representing nearly 2,000 companies that employ more than 280,000 individuals in 17 cities and counties in Southeast Virginia, has endorsed “Virginia’s Road to the Future”, the comprehensive, long-term transportation funding plan proposed by Gov. Bob McDonnell.

AAA: Gas will cost less in 2013

Gasoline prices this year will be less expensive than in 2012 as a result of increased domestic oil production and lower demand, according to AAA. The national average price of gasoline should peak at $3.60-$3.80 per gallon barring any significant unanticipated events, which compares to a peak of $3.94 a gallon in 2012.

Medicare Fraud Reported

Virginia residents have begun receiving fraudulent calls involving Medicare cards. The State VICAP office at DARS has received at least 10 calls since January 3 from Medicare beneficiaries regarding calls asking them to verify their personal information in order to receive their new Medicare card. Specifically, the callers are asking beneficiaries to verify their bank account and social security numbers as well as their address.
