McClellan, Stamos: Cuccinelli should explain refusal to support Violence Against Women Act

Jennifer McClellan and Arlington County Commonwealth’s Attorney Theo Stamos condemned the failure of the U.S. House of Representatives to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act and asked Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to explain why he refused to join 47 other state attorneys general in asking congress to pass the law.

It’s that time again. Virginia General Assembly time. Remember that little election way back in November 2011, the one when all 140 seats of the General Assembly were up for grabs? Now it is time for the winners to take their annual winter trek down the James. As for those the voters have excused from such chilly trips to Richmond, they are free to go elsewhere this winter, preferably to a more hospitable spot where “the weather better suits their souls.”

State announces boating-access grants

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced on Monday 15 grants totaling $440,900 awarded by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to improve boating access to the public waters of Virginia. Identified as a need in Virginia’s Outdoors Plan, these new and improved boating access sites will help boaters access the bountiful public waters of the Commonwealth.

New USDA regulation enhances nation’s ability to trace livestock moving across state lines

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced last week that the United States Department of Agriculture has completed a final regulation to improve the traceability of U.S. livestock moving across state lines. USDA finalized the regulation prior to Christmas and anticipates that the new federal regulation will become effective in March 2013.

As you may know, on New Year’s Day, the House of Representatives received a proposal from the United States Senate regarding the actions it wished to take to address the fiscal cliff. While I was pleased that the Senate finally offered a proposal of its own to address this crisis, I was disappointed that our colleagues in the Senate waited until the last minute and sent us a proposal that does not address our spending problem.
