As 2012 comes to an end, we have much to look forward to as a new year begins, and with it a new Congress. Though much uncertainty surrounds us, I remain confident that our best days are still ahead.

Gov. Bob McDonnell has declared January 2013 as Virginia Agriculture Census Month. The census takes place every five years; the last national agricultural census was in 2007. January 2013 is the commemorative month for the 2012 Ag Census because 2012 is the production year but reporting occurs in January through February 4.

Shawn Daivari has been in the news recently for something a bit out of character. The bad-guy wrestler turned face for a few minutes on a subway train in Minnesota to confront a passenger who was threatening another man – putting the aggressor in a chokehold until he was subdued, then throwing him off the train for the police to deal with.


The Virginia women’s basketball team won the team title at the Cavalier Classic presented by Holiday Inn University Area with a 54-45 victory over Xavier. The Cavaliers’ Telia McCall (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) was named the MVP of theTournament.

The fruit trees aren’t budding on the hill and the bees aren’t buzzing around their hives as Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) settles into winter 2013 in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. But EMU has tilled its soil for a flourishing “edible campus” in the spring.

The University of Virginia improved to the number two spot in “best value in public colleges” in the annual Kiplinger ranking of the top 100 schools. Other Virginia schools ranked in the top 100 include the College of William and Mary (4), James Madison University (20), Virginia Tech (28), University of Mary Washington (53), George Mason University (56) and Christopher Newport University (87).

Atlantic Coast Conference schools had 16 of their former players chosen for this year’s National Football League Pro Bowl Wednesday evening in the initial selections to the prestigious NFL all-star game.

A report released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture this fall provides a detailed look at the varied business models being used by American farms. In 2007, close to a third—or 686,600—of all U.S. farm households engaged in 791,000 income-generating activities other than farm commodity production, creating $26.7 billion in household income.
