#4 UVa. baseball evens series at Georgia Tech

Scott Silverstein (R-Sr., Olney, Md) allowed a run and two hits over seven strong innings as the fourth-ranked Virginia baseball team cruised to a 7-2 victory at No. 17 Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta. Silverstein (6-0) struck out nine and walked two in tying his career-long effort as UVa. (31-5, 13-4 ACC) evened the series at a game apiece.

Jarman Gap prescribed burn completed

The 500-acre Jarman Gap prescribed burn in Shenandoah National Park was successfully completed on Wednesday and Thursday, April 10-11. Assistant Fire Management Officer John Fry reported that “prescribed fire objectives were achieved.” Fry added that local residents and visitors will continue to see smoke from within the burn area over the next several days.

Report: Terry McAuliffe raises $5.1 million in first quarter

Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe’s campaign announced today that it had raised about $5.1 million during the first quarter. More than 3,600 Virginians contributed, making up about 72 percent of the contributors. About 74 percent of the donations were for $100 or less. This strong grassroots support from Virginians stands in stark contrast to Ken Cuccinelli, whose largest backer to date is the extreme anti-abortion group Susan B Anthony List.

State posts 6.1 percent revenue decline in March

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced today that March revenue collections decreased by 6.1 percent from March of last year. March is not generally a significant month for revenue collections, and growth rates can be can be distorted due to the timing of the leading edge of final and estimated payments from corporations and individuals which are due April 17 and May 1. On a year-to-date basis, total revenue collections rose 4.4 percent through March, ahead of the annual forecast of 3.6 percent growth.
