Interstate 81 accident leaves live wires in road, hours of backups

At 3:01 p.m. Monday, Virginia State Police Trooper A.J. Wouters was called to the southbound lanes of Interstate 81 at the 243 mile marker for a tractor-trailer crash. A southbound tractor-trailer ran off the right side of the road, struck the guardrail, continued up an embankment, struck a utility pole, and then struck a sign before finally coming to rest.

Kimberly Watters steps down from Waynesboro Downtown Development Inc.

Waynesboro Downtown Development Inc. executive director Kimberly Watters has retired from her position. Watters, who was in the post for six years, retired effective Nov. 1. She noted in a statement the “organizational challenges” faced in Waynesboro, most notably reductions in city funding that have threatened the future of WDDI for several years.

Sleepy time: One in four drivers have hard time keeping eyes open on the road

Here’s a sobering thought: a new AAA study reports that more than one in four motorists were so sleepy driving in the past month that they had a hard time keeping their eyes open while driving. The sleepiest driving group, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study: 19- to 24-year-olds, at 33 percent.

#1 UVa. women’s soccer rolls past Maryland in ACC Tournament quarters

The top-ranked Virginia women’s soccer team posted its first 20-win season in school history as it downed Maryland 6-1 in an ACC Tournament quarterfinal Sunday in front of 2,349 fans at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers (20-0) advance to meet Virginia Tech in Friday’s ACC semifinals in Cary, N.C., while the Terrapins (10-10) were eliminated from their final ACC Tournament.

JMU basketball slips past D2 Philadelphia in OT in exhibition

Andrey Semenov led JMU to a 73-69 overtime victory in a men’s basketball exhibition game against Philadelphia University on Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center. Semenov accumulated a team-high 28 points, 13 of which came during overtime play, including a game-winning three-pointer with seven seconds to go.

Fishburne to host state semifinal playoff football game on Saturday

Fishburne, off to its first 8-0 start in football since 1913, will host North Cross in a state semifinal playoff game in Waynesboro on Saturday, Nov. 10. Kickoff is at noon for the playoff game at Fishburne Military School. FMS is the #2 seed in the Virginia Independent Schools state playoffs. North Cross is the #3 seed.

New Dem TV ad: Cuccinelli ‘happy’ with Tea Party government shutdown

Polls show Virginia voters didn’t like the 16-day federal government shutdown, and that the bulk of those voters blame Republicans for the shutdown. A new Democratic Party of Virginia TV ad, “Happy With It,” will remind voters on Election Day that Republican governor nominee Ken Cuccinelli was, well, happy with it.
