Disaster preparedness program sees increased interest

September marked the ninth annual National Preparedness Month, a concentrated awareness and disaster preparation campaign sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission (CSPDC) used the month to showcase the Valley’s regional disaster preparedness and mitigation program, Shenandoah Valley Project Impact (SVPI).

The campaign was short. About two hours on a chilled fall morning with the fog rolling in – along with a small army of VIPs and the press. The army was not led by a Civil War general named Hunter, for the barracks across the Virginia Military Institute’s Parade Grounds were left intact. It was led by a very civil civilian who is advocating for more generals, strange as that may sound. His reasoning: “The only way human beings can win a war is to prevent it.” Those words came from VMI alum, General George C. Marshall. (Disclosure: All outside speakers at VMI must refer to Gen. A top New York City personal trainer will speak on the topic of fitness at the Waynesboro YMCA on Saturday, Oct. 6. Holly Rilinger is a Waynesboro native and former state basketball player of the year at Waynesboro High School before going on to star at James Madison University and the WNBA. Rilinger is a Nike Master Trainer and a Master Spin Instructor for one of the largest and most successful spin companies in the world, Flywheel.

If Andy Schmookler can translate YouTube views into votes, he’s halfway to a monumental upset. A video of a speech given by the Sixth District Democratic congressional nominee is approaching 90,000 views on YouTube. Incumbent Bob Goodlatte won re-election in 2008 with 192,000 votes in the Sixth, garnering 63 percent of the vote in his race with Democrat Sam Rasoul.

Thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge, WTA’s Gateway will host a congress of magicians for a weekend of magic in Downtown Waynesboro. The September 28-30th weekend will feature three performances at WTA’s Gateway, two magic classes, and seven performances at downtown restaurants and local venues.
