The No. 7 Virginia baseball team scored four runs in the 11th inning and then held off a furious North Carolina rally in the bottom of the inning to claim a wild 8-7 victory over the second-ranked Tar Heels Saturday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd of 4,100 at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill. Virginia (45-9, 22-8 ACC) won the series, two games to one, and captured eight of its 10 ACC series this year.

Unlikely hero Ryan Battaglia smacked a game-winning two-run single in the bottom of the ninth, capping Carolina’s improbable three-run rally that gave the Mudcats their first win at Five County Stadium in their last ten tries. Tyler Naquin and Francisco Lindor, both of whom contributed three-hit performances, crossed the plate to transform a 4-3 deficit to the Salem Red Sox into a 5-4 victory celebration.

The Lynchburg Hillcats couldn’t match the bats of the Frederick Keys in Thursday’s rubber match, losing 11-7 at City Stadium. Robby Hefflinger hit his ninth home run of the season and Matt Lipka had three hits in the game, but it wasn’t enough. The Hillcats bullpen allowed eight runs on 13 hits in five innings of relief. The Hillcats defensive woes continued with a four-error night.
