Mark Warner joins bipartisan group introducing Student Right to Know Before You Go Act

U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner (D-VA), Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) today introduced The Student Right to Know Before You Go Act to ensure that a wide range of comparative data about higher education programs is more readily available for prospective students and their families. They discussed their bipartisan legislation during a roundtable on Capitol Hill this morning with students, parents and school counselors.

Gov. Bob McDonnell announces agriculture and forestry industries grant recipients

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced today the recipients of fiscal year 2013 planning grants from the Governor’s Agriculture & Forestry Industries Development Fund (AFID). Eleven projects covering more than thirty localities have been awarded a total of $249,000 to support the growth of agricultural and forestry projects in the Commonwealth.

Lynchburg Hillcats fall 3-1 at Myrtle Beach

Neither starter surrendered a run in a pitchers duel tonight between the Lynchburg Hillcats and Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The ‘Cats fell 3-1 with all four runs scoring in the seventh frame. Kellin Deglan delivered the game-winning hit, a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh off reliever Ryan Woolley. Starter Greg Ross threw the first five innings scoreless, but took a no-decision for the Hillcats.

Virginia Living publishes its second annual guide to the Commonwealth’s ‘Bests’

Virginia Living’s second annual Best of Virginia issue is now on newsstands. The statewide guide to all that is ‘best’ in Virginia from dining to shopping to doing, Best of Virginia 2013 lists the more than 1,200 winners from Virginia Living’s second annual Best of Virginia Readers’ Survey conducted in January. More than 25,000 votes were cast in 400 categories covering the best in arts, culture and entertainment, living and recreation, shopping and services, and food and drink across the state.

Hot bats lift Lynchburg Hillcats

The Lynchburg Hillcats scored four runs in the first and four in the sixth to take Sunday’s rubber match, 9-4, over the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Matt Lipka led off the Hillcats offensive ballgame with a home run and David Rohm had three hits, falling a home run shy of the cycle, in the win. Jarett Miller picked up his third win in as many starts since joining the rotation.

Winston-Salem crushes Salem Red Sox, 10-1

Mark Tracy blasted a pair of home runs as the Winston-Salem Dash crushed the Salem Red Sox 10-1 in Friday’s series opener at BB&T Ballpark. With three big innings, Winston-Salem registered the rout, sending Salem to its fourth consecutive loss. Dash starter Chris Bassitt stymied the Sox during his sensational 90-pitch, seven-inning performance, while the visitors took one on the chin after arriving to town around 7 AM that morning following Thursday’s overnight bus ride from Wilmington.

Lynchburg Hillcats lose pitchers’ duel to Wilmington

The Lynchburg Hillcats didn’t give up a hit until the eighth inning, when the Wilmington Blue Rocks used two hits to push a run across that proved to be the difference in a 1-0 final. James Hoyt did not allow a hit through six innings, facing just one over the minimum. It was his first start of the season and second of his career.

Salem Red Sox lose in extras

One week after the Salem Red Sox won three straight at home to take three out of four from the Blue Rocks, Wilminigton returned the favor at Frawley Stadium. On this evening, Salem’s four-run lead disappeared with two outs in the last of the sixth, and Wilmington took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the 11th, when Jorge Bonifacio’s sacrifice fly to right brought home Justin Trapp to give the Blue Rocks a 7-6 victory.
