Sen. Tim Kaine talks business in Waynesboro

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., was in Waynesboro on Thursday to meet with city leaders to discuss economic development in Waynesboro. Kaine met with City Councilman Tim Williams, City Manager Mike Hamp and Assistant City Manager Jim Shaw to discuss several ongoing development projects in the River City. Kaine then toured Downtown Waynesboro to learn more about the work on the Center for Coldwaters Restoration and to meet with several owntown business owners.

University of Virginia team wins Governor’s Business Plan Challenge

Timothy Higgins, Andrew Andreae and Jessica Ungerleider, representing the University of Virginia, won the Capital One Grand Prize today at the Governor’s Business Plan Challenge. In recognition of Virginia’s strong entrepreneurial environment, the statewide challenge, co-hosted by Work It, Richmond, featured the best business plans or concepts crafted by undergraduate students this year.

Lynchburg Hillcats roughed up by Winston-Salem

Mark Pope gave up nine runs, and the Lynchburg Hillcats pitching staff allowed a season-high 20 hits in a 15-6 loss to the Winston-Salem Dash Wednesday night. It’s the highest single-game hit total allowed by a team in the Carolina League this season. Ross Heffley hit his first home run of the year for Lynchburg and drove in three runs to pace the Hillcats offense.

Lynchburg Hillcats hold off Winston-Salem

The Lynchburg Hillcats bullpen, which entered Tuesday with a 2.27 ERA, gave up four runs over the last four innings, but the Hillcats were able to hold on for an 8-6 win over the Winston-Salem Dash. Tommy La Stella hit his first home run of the year and scored three runs while Hillcats starter Jarrett Miller went five innings to get his second win in as many starts.

Holland solid in Lynchburg Hillcats win

A.J. Holland matched the longest outing of his career with seven innings of one-run baseball for the Lynchburg Hillcats to outduel the Winston-Salem Dash, 6-3, Monday night at City Stadium. The Hillcats took the lead in the seventh on an RBI-double by David Rohm and later got some insurance on a Robby Hefflinger two-run home run.

Mark Warner, Tim Kaine join letter urging president to move on VA claims backlog

U.S. Sens. Mark Warner (D-VA) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) today sent a letter to President Obama urging him to take action to reduce the current backlog of veterans’ disability claims. Currently, the average claim takes over 300 days to be resolved. In the letter, Sens. Warner and Kaine, who were joined by 65 other members of the Senate, cited long delays in cities across the country in making the case for swift action to reduce the backlog.

Lynchburg Hillcats win third straight

Fernando De Los Santos, who entered Friday with just two hits on the season, delivered a bases loaded triple in the ninth that proves the difference in a Lynchburg Hillcats 6-3 win over the Salem Red Sox in the series opener at Salem Memorial Ballpark. James Hoyt pitched four scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Lynchburg. Hoyt has now gone 16.1 consecutive innings without allowing a run.

Lynchburg Hillcats outslug Winston-Salem

The Lynchburg Hillcats woke up their bats tonight with 19 hits on their way to a 15-8 win over the Winston-Salem Dash. Only 15 runs had scored in the first 3 games of the series before the 23-run explosion. Matt Lipka starred in the highlight filled night going 4-for-5 with a cycle. It was the second cycle by a Hillcat in less than nine months. Dan Brewer did it July 29, 2012 in Salem. The 15 runs and 19 hits for the ‘Cats tonight set new season-highs for the club.

Salem Red Sox defeat Wilmington, 7-3

The Salem Red Sox scored the final seven runs to win their third straight over the Wilmington Blue Rocks, taking three out of four in the series with a 7-3 triumph on Thursday night. Mike Augliera tossed seven strong innings to improve to 3-0 on the year, while the offense erupted late to overcome the early three-run deficit. Sean Coyle homered for the second straight night, while Garin Cecchini continued his red-hot stretch by reaching base three times.
