More than a few Waynesboro Generals baseball fans were mildly upset that the opening ballgame of their team’s second-round 2013 Valley Baseball League playoff series was called by rain only after the team had made an hour-plus bus trip to the field to find out that the home team had somehow neglected to put its tarp down on the field before what turned out to be a brief storm had hit.

Second-ranked Fishburne came out of the gate a little slow, but the Caissons went on a scoring burst spanning the halftime break en route to posting an easy 86-60 win over New River Community College.

Tavarius Shine hit a halfcourt shot at the first-half buzzer to give #10 Fork Union a 37-36 halftime lead over #4 Fishburne. Then the Caissons stormed out of the locker room with a 19-3 run in the first 3:49 of the second half and never looked back en route to posting a 94-73 win Tuesday in Waynesboro, Va.
Mike Bocock stays busy in “retirement”

Legendary baseball coach Mike Bocock isn’t exactly taking the summer off from coaching. Bocock, who led the Waynesboro Generals to the 2013 Valley League championship, his eighth in 25 years as a VBL coach, stepped down from the job after hoisting the Jim Lineweaver Cup in August, but Bocock will be patrolling the dugout for a new team this year.

Hargrave had a 10-point lead with 5:17 to go. Fishburne had Jordon Talley. Talley had a hand in 16 FMS points in the final 5:17, and the Caissons closed out the Tigers on a 21-5 scoring run to take a 101-95 win in a matchup of two national Top 5 teams Tuesday night in Waynesboro, Va.
