Americans are observing Veterans Day. Some will observe it with a day off from work or checking out the special Veterans Day sales that will be held in department stores. But the real meaning of the day should be to think about the great sacrifices of the men and women who deserve to be honored.

Behind a combined 55 points from their three leading scorers – D.J. Covington, QJ Peterson and Rodney Glasgow – the VMI Keydets claimed the All-Military Classic championship with a 71-63 win over the Air Force Falcons Saturday evening at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va.

The VMI Keydets took full advantage of five turnovers and 13 penalties by the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs, and led wire to wire in a 27-9 Keydet win in Big South football action Saturday afternoon in Lexington. The victory came in VMI’s final Big South football game, prior to next year’s jump to the Southern Conference.

Wal-Mart has donated to the Commonwealth of Virginia more than 50 acres of land in Orange County associated with the Civil War battle of Chancellorsville and most notably with the battle of the Wilderness. Virginia’s Department of Historic Resources, the agency that will receive and steward the donated land, has worked quietly with Wal-Mart to complete a the donation documents and its acceptance.

The top-ranked Virginia women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to No. 5 Virginia Tech 4-2 Friday night in an ACC semifinal at the WakeMed Soccer Park. The loss snapped the Cavaliers (20-1) school-record 20-game win streak.

Virginia’s wine industry generates $747 million for the state’s economy. According to a 2012 report released by Gov. Bob McDonnell’s office, that figure is more than twice a 2005 estimate of how much the industry would grow in seven years.
