UVa. basketball tops Missouri State, 83-63, to win Corpus Christi Challenge

Sophomore Justin Anderson sparked a first-half comeback as Virginia posted an 83-63 win over Missouri State Saturday in the championship game of the Corpus Christi Challenge at American Bank Center. Anderson scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the first half to lead the Cavaliers to their first tournament championship in the Tony Bennett era.

Parking lot perils prevail on Black Friday, Christmas shopping season

The National Retail Federation predicts that approximately 97 million shoppers nationwide will take advantage of Black Friday deals today. In total, 140 million are expected to join the shopping frenzy this weekend, numbers which are sure to result in parking lots which are overflowing with often frantic shoppers.

And cleaning them up and preventing further damage can be challenging, since much of the contamination has accumulated over time and results from what is known as “non-point source” pollution, which accounts for as much as 60 percent of the water pollution in the U.S.

Gov. McDonnell sets date for special election in Virginia House District 11

Gov. Bob McDonnell has set Jan. 7, 2014, as the date for the special election to fill the seat of Del. Onzlee Ware, who has announced his retirement from the Virginia House of Delegates. The governor will not issue the writ of election until Dec. 6 in order to give political parties and election officials time to prepare for the nomination process.

UVa. basketball routs Hampton, 69-40

UVa. broke open a tight game with a 23-0 first-half run en route to blasting Hampton, 69-40, on Tuesday in Charlottesville. The Cavs (5-1) got off to a sluggish start against the Pirates. A jumper by Hampton’s Dionte Adams at the 9:59 mark tied the game at 16. A Joe Harris three-pointer on Virginia’s next possession gave UVa. the lead, but it was still 19-16 ‘Hoos at the 7:48 media timeout.
