State Board of Elections certifies Mark Herring winner in attorney general race

The State Board of Elections voted unanimously Monday to certify Democrat Mark Herring as the winner in the hotly-contested state attorney general race. Herring defeated Republican Mark Obenshain by 165 votes out of the more than 2.2 million votes cast in the Nov. 5 election, easily the closest margin percentage-wise in state political history.

JMU will not retain head football coach Mickey Matthews after the Dukes failed to make the FCS playoffs for the fourth time in five years. That’s how the school’s athletics department termed the firing in a news release on its website Monday morning, in a move that shocked some in JMU Nation, but seemed to be in the offing to others.

The No. 19/20 William and Mary football team closed out the season with a 31-20 loss at Richmond on Saturday afternoon. Although W&M (7-5, 4-4) led 10-7 after the first quarter, Richmond (6-6, 4-4) outscored the Tribe 17-3 in the second quarter and added a touchdown on its opening drive of the second half to earn the win.

Second-half meltdown costs VMI against Bucknell, 35-23

The VMI Keydets took a 17-7 lead midway through the third quarter, but the Bucknell Bison forced four turnovers in the final 22:07 and went on to a 35-23 win in non-conference football action Saturday at VMI’s Foster Stadium. The game was the season finale for both schools and was VMI’s Senior Day.
