It was as good a time as any to look at the RPI ratings. Going into Monday’s game at Tennessee, Virginia was a decent, if middling, 51st overall, sandwiched between VCU and Mercer. An RPI rating of 51 doesn’t guarantee you an NCAA bid, but you’re close, and if you’re UVa., you’ve got the whole ACC season to build on what was going into Monday night already the 44th-toughest schedule in the country.
Tennessee scored just 38 points in a loss to UVa. in Charlottesville last year. The Vols had more than that by halftime in an 87-52 pasting of the ‘Hoos Monday night in Knoxville.

My Google News alert for Mike London keeps buzzing with columnists across the country writing about a USA Today analysis of how much D1 schools are paying their football coaches on a cost-per-win basis. According to the analysis, UVa. paid London $1.09 million per win in 2013. (With one of those wins coming against one of the weaker I-AAs in the country, VMI.)
A 6-0 second-half run pulled Norfolk State even, but Virginia responded with an extended 20-5 run to regain control and held off a couple of late Spartan charges en route to a 66-56 win Monday night in Charlottesville. UVa. (9-3) led by as many as 10 in the first half, but Norfolk State (8-5) was able to hang around.

As we gather with friends and family to observe this holiday season and to pray for peace on earth and good will toward men, I thank you for the opportunity to represent Virginia’s Fifth District in the United States Congress. The blessings we enjoy as Virginians are abundant, and I am grateful every day for the natural beauty, the agricultural bounty, and the hardworking entrepreneurial spirit we see all across our great district.
