Virginia makes it hard for governors already by only letting them serve one four-year term. Then we make it harder for them by only letting them submit one budget. OK, so technically they submit two budgets, one in the middle of their term and one at the end, for their successor to have to deal with.

Motorists rang in 2014 paying the highest price for gasoline on record for New Year’s Day ($3.32), marking the fifth consecutive January 1 that Americans have paid more at the pump than the year prior and the fourth straight year with a new record to start the year.

WTA’s Gateway will present its first performance of the Custin Jazz Series on Saturday, Jan 11. Featured will be trumpeter John D’earth and his band. The performance is at 8 pm at what was voted “the best intimate music venue in the Valley”. WTA’s Gateway is at 329 West Main in downtown Waynesboro.

Virginia led by as many as 22 points, then held off a late Florida State rally, to win its ACC opener, 62-50, on Saturday. The Cavs (10-4, 1-0 ACC) only got two minutes out of leading scorer Joe Harris, who left after suffering a possible concussion early in the first half. UVa. also struggled mightily from the foul line, making just 18 of its 33 attempts from the charity stripe.

“If [Governor-elect] Mr. McAuliffe thinks he can usurp powers of the legislature, he’s courting a divorce before the honeymoon… this is Virginia, not Washington.” That’s what I told the Charlottesville NBC affiliate recently when asked to comment about McAuliffe’s plan to extend special protections to certain classes of state employees.
