Valley Program for Aging Services and the Central Shenandoah Unit of the Medical Reserve Corps, Virginia Department of Health will partner to offer “Know Your Numbers” blood pressure screening and education in June. The events are free to anyone, and will include refreshments and giveaways.

Two groups from Highland County recently enjoyed outings provided under the Department of Rail and Public Transportation grant funding. On Tuesday, April 2, a van full of women from the Highland County Chapter of the Red Hat Society and the Highland Garden Club took a trip to Charlottesville, Virginia, to see the “Carot to Cezanne” art exhibit. Before visiting the exhibit, the ladies ate lunch at The Old Mill Room at The Boar’s Head Inn. Fun was had by all, and they’re looking forward to the next trip!

The Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) has announced that the funding for the temporary Virginia Lifespan Respite Voucher program has been very popular and that they are very close to obligating all of the available grant funds.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a pre-construction citizen information meeting regarding work at the Interstate 64, exit 91 interchange. The meeting will be held on April 4, 2013 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Preston L. Yancey Volunteer Fire Department located at 2015 Jefferson Highway, Fishersville, VA 22939.

Most of the snowfall has stopped in the Shenandoah Valley. Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will be out tonight to monitor and treat roads. Motorists should drive with caution and watch for refreezing of roadways.

The only thing predictable about a “short” session is that the days will be full and pass by quickly. We are more than a third of the way through the 46 day session and had real fireworks this past week. On Monday, the nation celebrated Martin Luther King Day and the second inauguration of President Barack Obama. Nevertheless, since the Virginia Constitution calls for the General Assembly to be in session, we were hard at work considering bills and resolutions. All legislation has importance to someone, but overshadowing those bills was a tactic involving redistricting that was sprung on the Senate at the close of business on Monday afternoon.
