Gov. McDonnell announces matching tourism grants

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced today that more than $750,000 in matching grant funds will be awarded to 42 local tourism initiatives as part of Virginia Tourism Corporation’s (VTC) Marketing Leverage Grant program. The grants are designed to help local and regional tourism entities attract more visitors by leveraging local marketing dollars.

Recount, day one: Mark Herring increases lead in AG race

Democrat Mark Herring gained 91 votes on his margin on day one of the statewide recount of ballots in the 2013 Attorney General race. Fairfax County was given a one-day head start on the rest of the state because of the volume of votes that it will need to process for the recount. With one-third of the county’s 240 precincts counted, Herring’s overall state lead had grown to 256 votes over Republican Mark Obenshain.

The post-judicial filibusters era is off to a rousing start with the Senate confirmation Tuesday of Patricia Millett, of Alexandria to serve on the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.The Senate voted 56-38 to confirm Millett, who was blocked by a Republican filibuster on Oct. 31 in a move that prompted Senate Democrats to push for a rules change.

Virginia football player Anthony Harris was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) football first team, announced by the league on Monday. Running back Kevin Parks was named to the second team, offensive tackle Morgan Moses was named to the third team and defensive tackle Brent Urban was an honorable mention selection.

UVa. women’s soccer reaches College Cup with 2-1 win over Michigan

The Virginia women’s soccer team will make its first trip to the NCAA Women’s College Cup in 22 years after a 2-1 quarterfinal victory over Michigan Friday night in front of 1,882 fans at Klöckner Stadium. The top-seeded Cavaliers (24-1) will make their second overall appearance in the sport’s showcase event next week.

Top-Seeded UVa. women’s soccer defeats Saint Francis 5-0 in NCAA tourney

The top-seeded UVa. women’s soccer team opened play in the 2013 NCAA Tournament with a 5-0 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) Friday night in front of 1,611 fans at Klöckner Stadium. Sophomore forward Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) recorded her first career hat trick to lead the Cavaliers (21-1) into the second round.
