The fourth-ranked Virginia baseball team recorded an 8-6 victory over VMI Wednesday evening at Davenport Field. Nick Howard (So., Olney, Md.) picked up three hits to highlight a 13-hit night for the Cavaliers (27-3).

Staunton City Manage Stephen F. Owen announced today the selection of Steven L. Rosenberg as assistant city manager. Rosenberg replaces James M. Halasz, who left Staunton to accept the position of Halifax County administrator last July.

The No. 17th-ranked UVa. baseball team improved to 14-0 on the season with a doubleheader sweep against Maryland Saturday in the ACC opener at Davenport Field. A walk-off double from Derek Fisher (So., Rexmont, Pa.) lifted the Cavaliers to a 7-6 win in the opener before three pitchers combined for a 5-0 UVa shutout in the nightcap.

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Armed Services and Budget Committees, today met with top officials at the Pentagon, including Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, Deputy Secretary of Defense Ash Carter and Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno, to discuss the impact of sequestration in Virginia. The discussions covered the 90,000 civilian employees at the Department of Defense who will be furloughed, reductions to military base operations across the Commonwealth and delays in training and deployments that could decrease readiness. Kaine also spent time talking with civilian employees at the Pentagon about the effects of announced furloughs.

Virginia Organizing hosted on Monday a telemedia conference to respond to the devastating budget cuts related to sequestration. People from across Virginia who are directly affected by these cuts spoke about their concerns.

The No. 19 Virginia baseball team swept a Saturday doubleheader at Davenport Field, knocking off Bucknell, 12-4, in the first game and toppling Harvard, 11-5, in the nightcap. The Cavaliers improved to 11-0 with the win, while racking up 27 hits, 10 of which went for extra bases.

The No. 25 UVa. baseball won its sixth straight game to start the 2013 season Saturday, downing Toledo, 5-0, at Davenport Field. Scott Silverstein (R-Sr., Olney, Md.) and Whit Mayberry (Sr., Alexandria, Va.) combined on a five-hitter as the Cavaliers (6-0) recorded their second straight shutout against the Rockets (1-3).
