Norwich City is a professional football club based in Norwich, Norfolk, England. The club competes in the Championship, the second tier of English football. They first promoted to the top flight back in 1972. Their best achievement came in 1993 when they finished third in the top flight.

Founded in 1902, the club played all their home games at Carrow Road since 1935. Plus, they have a long-standing and fierce rivalry with Ipswich Town FC. The fans’ song ‘’On the Ball, City’’ is the oldest football song in the world which is still in use. Since Norwich City wears yellow and green kits, fans call them The Canaries.

Why Are Norwich Called the Canaries?

The name comes from The Strangers. They were European immigrants who came to stay in Norwich in the 16th Century. They were popular for breeding canaries. Also, the football club’s name is one of their well-known legacies.

Early Success in the Premier League Era

During 1992-93, Norwich City emerged as surprise title contenders. Yet, they failed to keep their top form in the final weeks to finish third in the top flight. Mark Robins was their top scorer that season. He signed for the club from Manchester United the previous summer.

The following season, Norwich City competed in the UEFA Cup for the first time. They managed to defeat German powerhouse Bayern Munich. Yet, they lost in the third round to Inter Milan. But their achievement was that they become the first British team to beat Bayern Munich.

Return to the Premier League

The 2003-04 season saw Norwich City win the First Division title. They finished 8 points clear of second-placed West Bromwich Albion. It was a promotion to the top flight for the first time since 1995. For much of their first season, the club struggled to play their best football. But they managed to beat Manchester United 2-0 towards the end of the season.

Their worst display came in the last game of that season. They played against Fulham and lost 6-0. This condemned them to relegation. Norwich City finished in 9th place in the Championship in the 2005-06 season. In the following season, they sacked their manager who was Nigel Worthington. It was due to poor displays and results.

Stadium

From 1902 to 1908, Norwich City played at Newmarket Road. They had a record attendance of 10,366 against Sheffield Wednesday FC in a FA Cup match. In 1908, the club moved to a new home in a converted disused chalk pit in Rosary Road. It was then nicknamed ‘The Nest’.

With the growing crowds of the 1930s, the club moved to its current home in Carrow Road in 1935. The original stadium was “miraculously” built in 82 days. It was the largest construction job in the city since the creation of Norwich Castle. It was also referred to as ‘The eighth wonder of the world’.

Norwich City…an Unbelievable Club

Like other professional football clubs, Norwich City had their ups and downs. But they remain entertaining to watch with their football philosophy.
