Chris Graham

uva soccerThe UVA women’s soccer team enters the 2018 campaign as the No. 8 team in the nation according to the United Soccer Coaches preseason rankings, which the organization released Tuesday (Aug. 7).

The Cavaliers finished the 2017 season ranked No. 9 nationally after advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championships for the 13th consecutive season and finishing fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference on the way to the semifinals of the ACC Championships.

This season, the Cavaliers will face six teams ranked in the preseason top 20, including home matches against No. 10 Florida State and No. 20 NC State. Virginia will travel to face No. 3 Duke, No. 4 Penn State and No. 14 Notre Dame.

Virginia returns 19 letterwinners from last season’s squad, including nine starters. Among them is preseason All-ACC selection Taryn Torres (Frisco, Texas), who is the top returning goal scorer from last season as she tallied eight goals and an assist. Torres also hit two game-winning goals as a freshman.

The squad also features nine players in their fourth season with the program and a recruiting class ranked fourth nationally. That fourth-ranked recruiting class features six players, four of them ranked among the top 40 players nationally.

Virginia opens the 2018 season at home on Friday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. against Colgate. The Cavaliers will host an exhibition match against UNCW at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 13. All home matches are played at Klöckner Stadium and tickets are on sale now.
