The Virginia women’s basketball team (10-4, 0-0 ACC) opens up Atlantic Coast Conference play on Sunday, Jan. 3, hosting No. 22 Miami (13-1, 1-0 ACC) at 1 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
The game will be televised live on the ACC Regional Sports Networks with Tom Werme and Debbie Antonelli calling the action. Sophomore Lauren Moses (Mount Holly, N.J.) followed up the best shooting game of her career in which she went 7-of-8 from the field against Coppin State with her most dominant rebounding game. On Tuesday against Richmond, Moses grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds, with eight of those coming in the first 8:03 of the game. Moses also scored 13 points for her third double-double of the season, earning tournament MVP honors. This was the second time this season Moses earned All-Tournament honors as she was named to the Paradise Jam All-Tournament team in November. Moses is currently tied for fourth in the ACC in rebounding, averaging 7.7 rebounds per game.
Sophomore Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va.), who was also named to the Cavalier Classic All-Tournament team, has scored in double-digits in seven-straight games with three 24-point performances in that span. Venson is currently tied for sixth in the ACC in scoring, averaging 15.1 points per game.
Senior Faith Randolph (Derwood, Md.), who earned ACC Co-Player of the Week honors on Monday, only made a combined seven field goals and scored 20 points in the Cavalier Classic, but tallied 11 assists and nine rebounds, including grabbing seven boards in the opener against Coppin State. Randolph has four or more assists in four of the last five games and five or more rebounds in three of the last five contests.
Virginia is 23-15 all-time in ACC openers including a 62-47 victory over Virginia Tech last year in Blacksburg. Miami rolled to its largest ACC win in nearly two full years with a 73-44 victory over NC State Wednesday at the BankUnited Center to win its ACC opener for the fourth season in a row.
The Cavaliers are 8-7 all-time against Miami. UVA has dropped six of the last seven matchups, including falling 62-52 last season in the ACC Tournament second round.
Virginia closes out its current homestand by hosting No. 3 Notre Dame on Thursday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
