With Good Reason releases episode on groundbreaking media

With Good ReasonWith Good Reason, a radio show and podcast produced by Virginia Humanities, releases “Holiday Favorites and Memories,” an episode that explores how the holidays evoke memories of the past. The show also looks at the influence of Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the popularity of Southern-themed Broadway musicals.

In this episode:

  • Tim Anderson (Old Dominion University) reaches back to the music of his youth during finals week at college in December during the 80’s and introduces a modern reworking of a Charlie Brown Holiday special classic.
  • Kevin Bartram (University of Mary Washington), an orchestra conductor, explains the special something that singers like Judy Garland and Tony Bennett bring to the classic songs of the season.
  • Jacqueline Secoy’ (Longwood University) remembers the seasonal music around her house and tunes that she first played in an orchestra.
  • Chris Kjorness (Longwood University) plays some of Sister Rosetta Tharpe’sgroundbreaking recordings and talks about her legacy.
  • Gary Richards (University of Mary Washington) argues that, despite popularity, Southern-themed musicals tend to give a negative view of the South and don’t reflect its diversity today.
