The Wayne Theatre Alliance is moving ahead with the planned renovation of the historic 82-year-old Downtown Waynesboro landmark even as its political future remains up in the air.
“This is a great day for Waynesboro! It has been a long, but rewarding journey. We thank all those in the community who have joined us in making this exciting development a reality,” WTA chairman Bill Hausrath said today in announcing the formal go-ahead from the alliance board of directors to begin work on perhaps the most visible portion of the theatre. The focus at the outset of the renovation will be on the Main Street facade – with efforts to restore the marquee to its original 1926 design and the restoration of the original multipaned front-lobby doors.
The first phase of work on the threatre will also return side lanterns and stone urns at the top of the building to their original locations and restore the two stained-glass windows at the front of the theatre.
The work should be done by the first of the year.
