VMI baseball’s Reed Garrett taken in 16th round of MLB Draft

vmi_logoVMI pitcher Reed Garrett was chosen by the texas rangers in the 16th round of the MLB draft, which took place Saturday afternoon via conference call.

Garrett, who has one season of collegiate eligibility remaining, comes off a junior season that saw him post Second Team All-Big South honors. He went 6-6 overall, but finished with a 2.23 ERA and held opponents to a .205 batting average.

The year, of course, was highlighted by his no-hitter against Lafayette in the Keydets’ home opener, but he also became the first Keydet to throw three complete games in a season since 2006. The VMI ace has enjoyed quite the weekend, as he picked up the win in Friday’s opening game for his summer league team, the Yakima Valley Pippins, with seven innings of three-hit baseball.

Garrett is the highest Keydet draft choice since the 2009 season, when Michael Bowman was selected in the ninth round by Milwaukee, and is the third VMI player to be selected by Texas. All three of those selections have been right-handed pitchers, as Garrett joins Coby Cowgill and Ryan Glynn in being selected by the Ranger organization.
