The ball was flying out of The Dish on Saturday – #9 Virginia went deep five times, Virginia Tech hit two more.
Remember when Ryan Zimmerman, future big-leaguer, who hit 284 homers in his MLB career, hit a total of seven in three seasons at Virginia, back in the early ’aughts?
We saw seven fly out in a couple of hours as the ’Hoos took Game 2 from the Hokies, winning 10-5.
Sam Harris hit two homers, his sixth and seventh of the season; AJ Gracia (8), Joe Tiroly (3) and Jake Weatherspoon (1) were also part of the long-ball parade for Virginia (16-3, 4-1 ACC).
Max Stammel (2-0, 4.37 ERA) got the win, going six innings, giving up five runs, all earned, on six hits, striking out two, walking one and hitting a batter, with a fastball sitting 90-92, and hitting 93 a couple of times.
Noah Yoder impressed me – touching 99 on the gun, sitting 96-97, striking out two in two scoreless innings of relief, allowing a hit.
Kevin Jaxel got the last three outs, after walking the first two hitters – his fastball was sitting 88-89, and touched 90 twice.
Brett Renfrow (0-3, 9.00 ERA) took the loss for the Hokies (8-9, 1-4 ACC), giving up seven runs, all earned, on five hits – three of them homers.
Game 3 of the series is set for a 1 p.m. Sunday first pitch.
