Appomattox County sheriff’s deputy struck, killed at accident scene in Campbell County

An Appomattox County sheriff’s deputy was killed when he was struck by a tractor-trailer swerving to avoid an accident scene on Route 460 in Campbell County on Thursday.

Burlie W. Duvall III, 33, of Concord, died at the scene of the 5:34 p.m. accident, according to a report from Virginia State Police.

Duvall and a second deputy returning from training at the Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy stopped to assist at the scene of an initial crash.

Per the VSP report, their vehicles were positioned in the two left lanes with emergency equipment activated.

Seven people were transported to area hospitals with injuries ranging in severity. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

The crash remains under investigation.
